Research profile

I am a marine biologist specialising in the ecology and integrated management of marine and coastal ecosystems. My research interests lie at the intersection of natural and social sciences, focusing on the dynamics of coastal social-ecological systems and the interactions between people and marine resources. I am particularly interested in participatory modelling and knowledge co-production to understand complex coastal systems and explore alternative futures for coastal livelihoods and resource use.

My current research focuses on using participatory social-ecological modelling to explore future pathways for coastal livelihoods and resource use in the Gulf of Nicoya, Costa Rica. Using Bayesian belief networks, we aim to integrate scientific knowledge with local and experiential knowledge to examine how climate change and management decisions may shape coastal social-ecological systems. This includes engaging diverse stakeholder groups to explore desirable futures, identify shared priorities and conflicting aspirations, and assess the implications of alternative scenarios. More broadly, I am interested in how participatory modelling can support decision-making under uncertainty and inform the integrated management of marine and coastal systems.
