Having participated in ZMT’s audit as a committee member, CEMarin executive director Andrés Osorio took the opportunity of his visit to Bremen to meet ZMT researchers from different programme areas of the institute to further strengthen the newly formed partnership between ZMT and CEMarin.

The CEMarin (Corporation Center of Excellence in Marine Sciences), is an academic consortium between Colombia and Germany that works to study problems in the field or marine sciences and apply this new knowledge to solve them. In a workshop with ZMT staff from science, knowledge exchange and the scientific diving centre, synergies between CEMarin and ZMT were identified and the potential for joint research projects explored. The sheer number of participants at the meeting illustrates the interest that ZMT has in Colombia and the long history of work and collaboration in this region. The new partnership between ZMT and CEMarin now provides a formal basis to develop joint projects with a long-term vision.

The meeting aimed to welcome ZMT members into the CEMarin network. Andrés Osorio kicked off the event with a presentation on CEMarin, explaining how the network operates, how to become a CEMarin Early Stage Researcher or senior Researcher, highlighting key research projects, and outlining exciting collaboration and funding opportunities. The Pre-COP16 course on "Green Strategies for Blue Ecosystems" to be held in Cali and the Colombian Pacific from October 16-19, 2024 and organised by CEMarin was also introduced. Following the presentation, participants engaged in round table discussions, where they explored the future of this alliance. Topics included potential joint projects, communication channels, and academic opportunities. CEMarin is committed to advancing these ideas and will follow up in future communications.

ZMT’s Oscar Puebla says: “It was a very productive meeting during which ZMT colleagues learned more about CEMarin, its mission and potential opportunities for joint activities. We are looking forward to further develop our collaboration with CEMarin.”

Andrés Osorio “On behalf CEMarin, we are very pleased to have had this opportunity to engage with both senior and early-career ZMT researchers. We were thrilled to have 14 ZMT participants join us, and we encourage all ZMT collaborators to stay connected and take advantage of the ongoing opportunities within CEMarin. I believe we’ve successfully identified a clearer path forward for collaboration, and look forward to creating more spaces like this one.”

ZMT is the only scientific institute in Germany solely dedicated to the study of tropical and subtropical coastal ecosystems. CEMarin can offer access to key tropical ecosystems in both the Pacific and the Caribbean. The collaboration not only promotes scientific excellence, but also directly benefits the conservation of marine biodiversity and the well-being of the communities that depend on these ecosystems.

CEMarin is an international non-profit academic consortium established in 2009, it became a DAAD Center of Excellence for research and teaching in 2015, focused on high-level interdisciplinary research and academic training through transnational cooperation with ten Colombian and German universities, among other national and international partners.
