The Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research GmbH (www.leibniz-zmt.de) is an independent research and teaching institute that provides scientific knowledge for the protection and sustainable use of tropical coastal ecosystems. To this end, we work in an inter- and transdisciplinary manner with our partners in the tropics. The ZMT is a member of the Leibniz Association.

Indices are increasingly employed to assess, communicate, and visualise the state of complex ecological and social systems in an accessible way. While several assessment frameworks exist for marine ecosystems (e.g., the Ocean Health Index, World Ocean Assessment), no framework currently integrates ecological, societal, and political components of (tropical) coastal systems with a global perspective. To address this gap, ZMT launched the project “Environmental and Societal Trends in Coastal Systems” (ESTiCS), with the goal to conceptualise and implement such a holistic assessment framework. ESTiCS aligns with the strategic institute expansion TropECS, developing ZMT towards a knowledge and capacity hub for modelling global change impacts on tropical coastal systems. Our goal is an assessment framework that is co-designed with partner institutions and stakeholders in the tropics, as well as regionally applicable and globally comparable.

We are (subject to release of funds) seeking a researcher with experience in (agent-based) modelling and/or indicator development, to propel the project to its next phase/stage, by finalising the concept and facilitating its implementation in pilot regions. ESTiCS is planned to be located within ZMT's Programme Area 4: “Ecosystem Co-Design for a Sustainable Anthropocene.”
