ZMT researchers rank among the world's top 2% most cited scientists

Several scientists affiliated with the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) are among the world's top 2% most cited researchers, according to the latest Stanford/Elsevier database. The August 2026 update recognises their scientific impact across a range of disciplines, highlighting ZMT's contribution to international marine and sustainability research.

The ranking is based on standardised citation indicators derived from Scopus data provided by Elsevier. It identifies researchers whose scientific publications are among the most frequently cited worldwide, distinguishing between two categories: career-long impact, which considers citations accumulated throughout a researcher's scientific career, and single-year impact, which measures citation performance during a particular year.

Six ZMT-affiliated scientists recognised for career-long impact

The following researchers with ZMT affiliations are included in the career-long impact category:

  • Prof. Dr. Raimund Bleischwitz
  • PD Dr. Marion Glaser
  • PD Dr. Tim Jennerjahn
  • Prof em. Dr. Ulrich Saint-Paul
  • Prof. em. Dr. Matthias Wolff
  • Prof. Dr. Martin Zimmer

Six researchers listed for their impact in 2025

In the single-year impact category, which reflects citation data for 2025, the following ZMT-affiliated scientists are represented:

  • Prof. Dr. Raimund Bleischwitz
  • PD Dr. Sebastian C. A. Ferse
  • PD Dr. Marion Glaser
  • PD Dr. Tim Jennerjahn
  • Prof. Dr. Nils Moosdorf
  • Prof. Dr. Matthias Wolff

In total, eight scientists affiliated with ZMT are represented across the two categories. Four appear in both rankings, while two are listed exclusively for their career-long impact and another two exclusively for their citation impact in 2025.

International visibility for marine and sustainability research

The Stanford/Elsevier database is a widely used resource for assessing scientific citation impact across disciplines. Its standardised indicators enable comparisons of researchers' citation performance while accounting for factors such as co-authorship and different citation practices.

The inclusion of ZMT-affiliated scientists reflects the international visibility of research associated with the institute. It also underscores the relevance of ZMT's interdisciplinary work on tropical coastal ecosystems, marine resources and sustainability challenges.
