ISATEC - International Studies in Aquatic Tropical Ecology (MSc)
The international M.Sc. study programme ISATEC was originally established in collaboration with the University of Bremen. It encompasses joint education and specialisation of German and foreign postgraduates in research on tropical aquatic ecosystems.
ISATEC prepares young professionals for research and practical work related to the management and conservation of tropical aquatic ecosystems and their resources. The courses are taught in English and follow the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The programme has been evaluated thrice (in 2002, 2007 and 2015) and was thereby qualified as “unique and very well-focused”.
Lecturers with many years of working and teaching experience in tropical countries are joined by scientists from the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology (MPI) and other German universities to teach the ISATEC courses.
PLEASE NOTE: From winter term 2020/2021 onwards, the M.Sc. programmes ISATEC and Marine Biology will be fused to form a single M.Sc. programme. ISATEC will be a specific study profile in the revised M.Sc. Marine Biology programme.
ISATEC is a member of the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) scholarship programme “Development-Related Postgraduate Courses”. If you are a citizen of a developing country, you may thus apply for a scholarship for the ISATEC profile through the DAAD.
Aims and objectives
ISATEC provides education and training in the following three thematic areas:
(1) Essentials for understanding structure and function of aquatic ecosystems in the tropics
(2) Concepts and methods for resource assessment, valuation and management
(3) Approaches for coastal planning and management
In addition, ISATEC provides training in oral and written communication skills, modeling and problem solving. Both, independent study and team work are encouraged.
Profile of the future MSc student
Participants will become experts in the field of aquatic ecosystem research as applied to the utilisation and conservation of tropical coastlines. They will be trained to join multidisciplinary teams working in the investigation and management of tropical coastal zones or freshwater systems as weil as to continue university studies (PhD) in the areas of aquatic ecology or integrated coastal zone management.
Employment may be found in:
- National and international organisations involved in
research and nature conservation - Governmental institutions dedicated to coastal system
and resource management - Consulting companies involved in environmental
approval work
Organisations dedicated to development aid - Universities and other agencies providing capacity
development and environmental education
