The coastal zone of South Vietnam is influenced by both local upwelling and nutrient and sediment inputs from mangroves. Research of the joint project is focused on the interaction between the mangrove and the adjacent coastal waters.

The aim of the Can Gio-project is to determine the possible differences in ecosystem functioning between natural and reforested mangrove areas within a biosphere reserve in South Vietnam.

The results will provide an important contribution to other sub-projects of the joint project, including insight into the dynamics of nutrients and organic material in the transition zone between land-ocean, which is dominated by mangroves in South Vietnam.
