Call for Applications: Summer School “Ocean Governance for Sustainable Marine Social Ecological Systems”
From 2 to 13 November 2026, the International Ocean Institute (IOI) and the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) will host the next edition of their renowned Summer School on Ocean Governance. Held online, the programme brings together early career scientists and practitioners to explore how marine and coastal systems can be governed sustainably in an era of rapid environmental and societal change.
Participants will engage with international experts and gain insights into key governance challenges, from institutional and legal frameworks to biogeochemical processes and the dynamics of the blue economy. Lectures by leading specialists – including Raimund Bleischwitz (Blue Carbon – an Economic Perspective), Lina Becker (Principles of Fisheries Management), Pradeep Singh (Regulating and Governing Seabead Mining), and Rüdiger Wolfrum (Ocean Governance and Law of the Sea) – will provide scientific foundations and real‑world perspectives on current ocean policy debates.
The course combines interactive sessions with group work on regional case studies, allowing participants to apply concepts directly to practical governance questions. The programme is free of charge for eligible candidates, supported by IOI and ZMT, and will select 20 - 30 participants.
