ZMT Alumni Network
An outstanding scientific network of more than 800 alumni from the tropics and worldwide
Since the establishment of the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) in 1991, about 190 doctoral students from over 50 countries have been trained and supervised by ZMT scientists. In addition, more than 290 alumni did get a Master degree in International Studies in Aquatic Tropical Ecology (ISATEC), which has been offered in cooperation with the University of Bremen since 1999.
Besides doctoral candidates, master- and undergraduate students, whose theses are also supervised by ZMT scientists, many international guest scientists have visited the institute in the past two decades; some in the context of a three-month NAM Fellowship, others as guest from institutes that have been collaborating with ZMT for many years. The guest scientists visited ZMT during different stages of their careers, from bachelor students to professors. Now, our alumni are mainly working for universities, research institutes, ministries, advisory agencies and non-governmental organizations.
ZMT is proud and grateful for its international colleagues, graduates and guest scientists and regards the support of this outstanding scientific network as crucial. Our alumni, who act as role models and mentors for current students, work in highly important regions and areas of marine ecology research.
By winning the "Research Alumni Strategies" competition of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in 2014, ZMT was able to develop and implement a comprehensive alumni strategy. The goals of the alumni work are the establishment and strengthening of international research cooperation, supporting scientific dialogue with our alumni, particularly in tropical partner countries, as well as assisting our alumni in networking among each other.
The Alumni Relations Officer coordinates the ZMT Alumni Network. International and regional alumni events, biannual newsletters, as well as the group "ZMT Alumni Network" on LinkedIn provide opportunities for gathering information, exchanging knowledge as well as networking.

ZMT Ambassador Initiative
The ZMT Ambassador Initiative was launched in September 2015 to further strengthen ZMT's alumni network worldwide. Currently, there are 31 alumni ambassadors who are committed to support the overall development of the alumni programme by building regional and national alumni networks in their countries of origin, actively supporting alumni events.
From 14 to 16 March 2016 the ZMT organised the first meeting of the alumni ambassadors. Nine ambassadors took part in this first meeting. In addition to the development of the alumni programme in general, future research collaborations were initiated by the group. Our ambassadors, who are doctoral and ISATEC graduates as well as guest scientists coming from e.g. New Zealand, Bangladesh, Ghana, Panama and Myanmar are currently working for universities, ministries, research institutions and non-governmental organizations.
