The Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research GmbH (www.leibniz-zmt.de) is an independent research and teaching institute that provides scientific knowledge for the protection and sustainable use of tropical coastal ecosystems. As part of the DFG project N2FIXHB, the working groups Biogeochemical Modelling and Systems Ecology (subject to release of funds) are looking for a

Student assistant (gn)

(Reference: 30-N2FIXHB-HiWi)

Your tasks:

• Conduct a systematic and scientifically structured literature review of UCYN-A, with a focus on their genetic identification, detection, occurrence, and distribution in marine environments.
• Systematically extract, evaluate, and synthesize scientific information on UCYN-A occurrence and associated environmental conditions, with the aim of identifying environmental factors and patterns that may regulate their presence across different oceanic regions.
• Compile scientific literature, field observations, and experimental data into structured overviews and a research database.
• Support the scientific visualization of UCYN-A occurrence through summary figures and distribution maps across different oceanic regions.
  
  

Requirements:

• a motivated student enrolled in a german university
• preferably a student at the master level in marine science, biology, biogeochemistry, microbiology, or a related field, with a strong interest in marine microbial ecology and/or nitrogen cycling
• familiarity with molecular/genetic methods (e.g. gene marker-based detection, phylogenetics), or a keen interest to learn about these topics, will constitute an advantage
• comfortable working with scientific literature and synthesizing findings from primary research papers
• being well organised, reliable and able to work independently
• interested in gaining experience with the various activities that are part of academic research processes (e.g. literature search, data synthesis, data analysis)
• very good English skills
  
  

Details of position:

• 25 hours/month employment starting as soon as possible
• Duration: 12 months
• Payment is determined in accordance with the minimum rates applicable to student assistants under the collective bargaining agreement for German states, but shall not be less than the applicable statutory provisions of the Act Regulating a General Minimum Wage (Minimum Wage Act—MiLoG) and the Minimum Wage Act for the State of Bremen (State Minimum Wage Act). Accordingly, as things stand at present, the hourly pay will be 15.20 euros gross as of April 1, 2026.
