The tropical and subtropical coastal ecosystems of the Asian-Pacific region possess an enormous marine biodiversity yet suffer from high neighbouring human population density, high inputs from some of the world’s largest rivers and exposure to extreme climatic phenomena. Therefore, they are particularly suitable for studying land-sea interactions.

China’s coastal zones are a major part of these ecologically and economically important regions. The tropical island Hainan embodies a particular diversity of habitats including rocky shores, sandy beaches, mangroves, sea-grass beds and coral reefs. However, the Hainan coastal ecosystems are undergoing considerable changes due to human activities and natural climate impacts.

The project LANCET was developed within the scope of a cooperation between Chinese and German partners for improving the scientific knowledge about land-sea interactions in Hainan. The achieved knowledge will contribute to the intended sustainable management of this unique region.
