14/12/2022 | The second ZMT Newsletter of 2022 puts a focus on the topic of ‘Blue Carbon’, i.e. the ocean’s ability to absorb the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, is a crucial asset for future climate protection strategies. We do research on both scientific uncertainties and parallel efforts to establish pilot projects. In this issue we report on the “sea4soCiety” project which is part of a research mission of the German Marine Research Alliance (DAM).
We also make a case for “Other Effective area-based Conservation Methods (OECMs)” and why they should find their way into the current biodiversity negotiations at COP 15 and on the ground.
Living in the age of digitalization we also explain how ZMT deals with data in our world of tropical marine research.
