10.11.17 | From November 15 to 17, 2017, an international symposium by the ZMT-led European COST Action Ocean Governance for Sustainability took place at the Universidad de La Laguna on Tenerife. The event kicked off with a Welcome Session by Sr. Dr. Francisco Almeida Rodríguez, Principal of the University La Laguna, Sr. D. Narvay Quintero Castañeda, a representative of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Canarian government, as well as Sr. D. Luis J. López-Abellán, Director of the Canary Island Oceanographic Institute. This was followed by a few words of welcome by local organiser José Pascual-Fernández and the COST Action´s chair Anna-Katharina Hornidge.
The keynote speakers at the symposium:
Prof. Philip Weaver (Seascape Consultants Ltd, UK) shared the status of policy developments in the field of deep sea mining.
Dr. Beatriz Martinez Romera (CEVIA, DK) talked about ocean governance in the age of climate change and sustainable development.
The morning of the second day of the conference was filled with meetings of the core group as well as the management committee of the action. A panel discussion among all working group leaders then added to scientific discussions and network planning. These events were framed by the main focus of the symposium on the production of publications by the Action's six working groups:
WG 1 Land-Sea Interaction
WG 2 Area-Based Management
WG 3 Seabed Resource Management
WG 4 Nutrition Security and Food Systems
WG 5 Ocean, Climate Change, and Acidification
WG 6 Fisheries Goverance.
