Dr. Britaldo Silveira Soares-Filho is a full professor of Department of Cartography, Institute of Geosciences, and an associate scientist at the CSR (Remote Sensing Center, https://csr.ufmg.br/csr/en/) of Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil. His research focuses on modeling of land-use policy scenarios, including integrated simulation of land-use changes in the tropics and the assessment of their impacts on climate, river regime, carbon balance, forest fires, agriculture and forestry rents, and biodiversity. In addition, Dr. Soares-Filho coordinates the development of DINAMICA EGO software (https://www.dinamicaego.com/), an environmental modeling freeware used by many scholars worldwide.
Environmental modelling in support of sound policy development
In my talk I will describe applications of environmental modeling to help answer several key policy questions now facing the conservation of tropical forests and savannahs. Special attention will be given to the implementation in Brazil of the European Union’s due diligence rules to enforce the import of deforestation-free products.
