08.06.2018 | From June 11-12, the European COST Action “Ocean Governance for Sustainability – Challenges, Options and the Role of Science” (CA15217) gets together for their 3rd International Symposium in the coastal city of Aveiro, Portugal. The conference is hosted by the University of Aveiro under the coordination of the Local Organiser Dr. Cristina Pita. Dr. Pita is looking forward to welcoming around 80 participants from 27 countries from science and politics to discuss the future of our oceans during a variety of scientific workshops and lectures.

On Monday June 11 (9 am) a welcome address by Prof. Dr. Carlos Borrego (Director of the Department of Environment and Planning, University of Aveiro) will kick off the course of events, followed by a speech from Dr. Ana Lillebø (Director of CESAM, University of Aveiro). After the welcome talks, Prof. Dr. Anna-Katharina Hornidge will address the audience in her function as the Chair of the Action.

Two distinguished keynote speakers have been invited to the conference. Telmo Jorge Alves de Carvalho (Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere) will talk about “The New Ocean Governance Model of Portugal, From Science to the New Ocean Economy” (June 11, 9:30am), while Dr. Nilufer Oral (Istanbul Bilgi University & Member of the UN International Law Commission) shares her research findings regarding “Meeting the Challenges of Establishing a Global Framework for Conservation and Sustainable Use of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction” (June 12, 12:00 noon).

All of these contributions frame the official scientific program comprising an abundance of workshops and meeting sessions of the six working groups of the COST Action OceanGov. The main focus will be the six core themes of this European network project: Land-Sea Interaction, Area-Based Management, Seabed Resource Management, Nutrition Security and Food Systems, Ocean, Climate Change and Acidification, as well as, Fisheries Management. Participating researchers will present their latest results in these fields, while preparing for a range of joint peer publications to be published within the upcoming months, which also function as designated deliverables to account for the ongoing funding of this European COST Action.

The 3rd International Symposium of Ocean Governance for Sustainability in Aveiro is organised by the University of Aveiro together with the grant holder institution Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) in cooperation with the European program “Cooperation of Science and Technology” (COST).

About the European COST Project “Ocean Governance for Sustainability”
For several years now, the European Union has been increasingly interested in questions on sustainable ocean management. Above all, an impression of great conceptual fragmentation and missing connections of local, regional, national and global approaches becomes apparent. The aim of the four-year European COST project “Ocean Governance for Sustainability” is thus to address problems of current legislations and regulations in a transdisciplinary way in order to adapt existing strategies in research and policy. The integrative approach which brings together natural, social and human sciences, as well as, international know-how is a specific feature of the COST projects funded by the European Union. The conference in Aveiro will be the 3rd network conference of the project, which was established in September 2016 in Brussels under the direction of Prof. Dr. Anna-Katharina Hornidge (ZMT).
