ZMT alumnus appointed as coordinator of WIOMSA's Kenyan chapter

Dr. Amon Kip Kimeli, an alumnus of ZMT, has recently been appointed as the country coordinator of the Kenyan chapter of the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA), of which ZMT is also a member. Dr. Kimeli aims at furthering WIOMSA’s vision by adding his data-driven perspective on coastal and marine resource management.

Dr. Kimeli obtained his doctorate in the working group Geoecology and Carbonate Sedimentology with a thesis on ”Assessing the Sources of Sediments and Mangrove Surface Elevation Changes in the Vanga Estuary, Kenya, Towards the Mitigation of Sea-Level Rise”.

He is now working as a geoscientist at the Kenya Marine & Fisheries Research Institute -Kisumu (KMFRI). His position involves work on ecosystem assessment, management and fostering the Blue Economy. He also is engaged on ocean mapping on shallow and deep water.

ZMT has a long-running connection with KMFRI recently joining forces for the Mombasa project (https://www.leibniz-zmt.de/en/research/research-projects/mombasa.html).

His ZMT supervisor Prof. Dr Hildegard Westphal congratulates Amon Kimeli on his new role: “This is great news. I wish Amon very well in his new role and hope that we can continue to further strengthen the existing collaboration of ZMT with both KMFRI and WIMOSA.”
