07/02/2020 | This week representatives of several marine science research institutions from Ghana were guests at ZMT to plan future collaborations in research and teaching. The delegation from the AFRICA CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IN COASTAL RESILIENCE (ACECoR) of the University of Cape Coast in Ghana mainly consisted of graduates of the M.Sc. program “International Studies of Tropical Aquatic Ecosystems (ISATEC)”, which ZMT has been offering in cooperation with the University of Bremen since 1999. The ISATEC alumni completed their Master's degree in Bremen more than 15 years ago. They have since held executive positions in their home countries and have now used their contacts at ZMT and in Bremen to sound out and initiate cooperation opportunities.

Prof. Dr. Denis Worlanyo Aheto completed the ISATEC program in 2004 and is now the Director of the AFRICA CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IN COASTAL RESILIENCE (ACECoR) at the University of Cape Coast. The ACECoR is a project supported by the World Bank and one of 22 centers funded by the African Higher Education Center of Excellence (see below). His colleague Dr. Noble Kwame Asare is head of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences at the University of Cape Coast and obtained his ISATEC Master's degree in 2002. Dr. Emmanuel Acheampong and Prof. Dr. Joseph Aggrey-Fynn both studied in Bremen in 2001 and are now working for the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences at the University of Cape Coast. The ZMT alumni are accompanied by fisheries biologist Prof. Dr. Francis Ewusie Kofi Nunoo from the University of Ghana.

About the AFRICA CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IN COASTAL RESILIENCE (ACECoR)
At ACECoR, young Africans are trained in specialised Master's (90 students) and PhD programmes (30 students) in the fields of integrated coastal zone management, fisheries management and oceanography and limnology. In addition, more than 150 already trained marine scientists from Africa will be able to specialise in advanced training courses and deepen their expertise. In addition, the Centre is conducting cross-cutting research to mitigate the rapid deterioration of the coastal and marine environment in West and Central Africa. These activities will be one of the topics of discussions on future cooperation with the ZMT.
