Honorary welcome for ZMT's Agostino Merico at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) in Ghana
Professor Agostino Merico from the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) was recently granted the honour of an official welcome by the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Prof. Denis Aheto. The meeting happened on the occasion of the Winter School “Computational modelling in marine ecology, fisheries and climate” 2025 which is currently taking place at UCC.
The Winter School, held 27- 31 January, is a cooperation between ZMT, the Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR) at UCC and the University of Energy & Natural Resources in Sunyani (Ghana).
Professor Merico also stressed that the Winter School promotes cultural exchange between students of different backgrounds and fosters ethical and legal values in ocean governance for a sustainable and peaceful use of marine resources.
“The Winter School is an opportunity for enthusiastic students to learn and discuss mathematical modelling techniques that are relevant for addressing problems in marine ecology, fishery, and climate,” he said.
Meanwhile, Prof. Aheto commended Prof. Merico for choosing UCC to host the Winter School and assured him of the university’s support to make the event a success. The exchange also covered a wide range of academic issues of mutual interest.
Also present at the meeting were Dr. Kwabena Owusu (University of Energy & Natural Resources in Ghana), Prof. Joseph Aggrey-Fynn (Head of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Science), Mrs Vera Kudjoe (Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR) and Mr. Alfred Ghartey (Senior Assistant Registrar at the Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor).
Many of these scientists have links to Bremen and ZMT. Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Aheto obtained his PhD at the University Uni Bremen, Prof. Joseph Aggrey-Fynn was a Master student in International Studies in Aquatic Tropical Ecology (ISATEC) and did his PhD at the University of Bremen and at ZMT, while Dr. Kwabena Owusu is a former doctoral student and postdoc of Agostino Merico.
Last week, Prof. Merico also gave a seminar at UCC Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Science cover the topic of “Tipping points and human resource system collapse in a simple model of adaptive dynamics”.
