ZMT mangrove ecologist Martin Zimmer elected to the board of the German Marine Research Consortium (KDM)

At the 25th General Assembly on 11 June 2024 (see photo above), the members of the German Research Consortium (KDM) elected their new Board of Directors. With three new members and one change within the organisation, the newly composed board represents the interests of marine research institutions under the umbrella of KDM.

KDM welcomes the following new members to the Executive Board:

  • Professor Dr Martin Zimmer, from the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research Bremen, fills the position of 2nd deputy, and  
  • Professor Dr Corinna Schrum from the Helmholtz Centre HEREON and
  • Professor Dr Oliver Zielinski from the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde, both of whom are members of the extended board.

The position of Chairman will continue to be held by Professor Dr Ulrich Bathmann, University of Rostock. Professor Dr Torsten Schlurmann from the Forschungszentrum Küste/Universität Hannover was elected as 1st deputy of the extended Executive Board. 

The association and the office would like to thank the departing members most sincerely for their commitment: 

  • Professor Dr Karen Wiltshirewho is taking up a new professorship at Trinity College Dublin (Ireland).
  • Professor Dr Martin Visbeckwho has assumed the position of Chief Executive Officer of a new foundation for "Deep Ocean Discovery" at KAUST in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and 
  • Professor Dr Detlef Stammerwho is retiring after 20 years as the last founding member of KDM. 

The new Executive Board, with the support of the offices in Berlin and Brussels, will continue to represent German marine research and the members of the German Marine Research Consortium in a sustainable manner and further expand the international visibility and strategic capability of German marine research.
