How do we shape sustainable marine conservation that involves science, society and local stakeholders in equal measure? Together with local partners, the ‘Transformation Through Transdisciplinarity’ working group is developing innovative approaches to sustainable ocean use and a fairer and equitable research culture. Based on experience gained in international projects such as MOOBYF and SOCPacific2R, new monitoring and management approaches are being promoted that combine local perspectives, diverse knowledge systems and scientific methods.
Our focus is on:
Participation and co-production of knowledge: working side by side with scientists, students, non-profit actors, local communities and resource users to jointly develop solutions for marine challenges.
Transdisciplinarity and self-reflection: Our research continuously scrutinises its own role, power relations and working methods - for greater fairness and impact.
Long-term capacity building by supporting all partners to develop, share, and consolidate monitoring and management competences.
Integration of research and social change - through transformative processes that combine both ecological sustainability and changes in scientific culture.
