14.02.18 | As part of a study tour, organised by the GIZ, a delegation of scientists from Benin and Togo recently visited the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) to learn the use of Earth Observation in German institutions, such as research, administration, and the private sector.

After a welcome by ZMT’s leadership Prof. Dr. Hildegard Westphal and Dr. Nicolas Dittert, scientist Dr. Alessio Rovere introduced the visitors to the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles such as drones which his work group ‘Sea Level and Coastal Changes’ employs for research on coastal erosion and mangroves (together with work group Mangrove Ecology).

After the talk Dr. Valeria Bers gave a presentation on the role and tasks of ZMT’s Office for Knowledge Exchange which acts as an interface between science and practice and promotes cooperation and transdisciplinary dialogue with non-scientific stakeholders from the tropics and Germany.

The visit ended with a guided tour of the ZMT’s marine experimental facility (MAREE) by Nico Steinel.
