21.05.2019 | Oceans are not only the subject of natural sciences. The humanities and social sciences also deal with this topic - especially in relation to colonial history, imperial wars, expropriation and colonisation of land, enslavement of human beings and the circulation of goods, knowledge and people.
These are closely linked to contemporary postcolonial societies. The international conference "Postcolonial Oceans: Contradictions and Heterogeneities in the Epistemes of Salt Water" deals with this topic from the perspectives of cultural studies, linguistics, ethnology, literature and film studies, history and geography as well as knowledge sociology.
The conference will take place from May 30 to June 2, 2019 at the University of Bremen and the German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven. The conference is organised by the Institute for Postcolonial and Transcultural Studies (INPUTS) at the Department of Linguistics and Literary Studies of the University of Bremen in cooperation with the research association "Worlds of Contradictions" and the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT).
It is the joint annual conference of the professional societies GAPS (Society for Anglophone Postcolonial Studies) and IACPL (International Association for Colonial and Postcolonial Linguistics). The conference will examine various topics. Examples are the past and present of port cities and coastal strips, migration, cultural, linguistic and knowledge exchange across oceans, maritime trade, ghost ships, maritime museum objects, climate change, the idea of the archipelago as well as people, natures and cultures in and around seas and oceans.
A total of around 150 participants are expected.
