New cooperation in tropical marine research: ZMT signs MoU with the Institut Halieutique et des Sciences Marines (IH.SM) in Madagascar
The Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Institut Halieutique et des Sciences Marines (IH.SM) in Toliara, Madagascar. This cooperation aims at joint projects and research activities, particularly focusing on the sustainable use of marine resources and the protection and conservation of tropical marine ecosystems. During the meeting Dr. Hauke Kegler, on behalf of ZMT, emphasized the importance of this partnership for international knowledge exchange and expressed enthusiasm for fruitful and innovative collaboration with colleagues in Madagascar.
In the past, ZMT and the Institut Halieutique et des Sciences Marines (IH.SM) in Toliara, Madagascar, already collaborated successfully. A notable example is the WIOGEN (Western Indian Ocean Governance & Exchange Network) project, which serves as a scientific networking platform fostering regional ocean governance in the Western Indian Ocean. WIOGEN connects academic, policy-related, private, and civil society institutions to strengthen the sustainable use of marine resources through integrative learning approaches.
Another ongoing collaboration is PaMo-NbS (Participatory Modeling for Nature-based Solutions) project, which aims to combine the deep-rooted understanding of local communities about their environment with scientific insights on nature-based solutions. Through participatory modelling tools, decision-makers are enabled to implement effective nature-based solution (NbS) and incorporate the invaluable knowledge of coastal communities into their planning and development processes.
